CBAT's primary funding programme is for an art residency of a Bolivian artist at Gasworks, a prestigious contemporary visual art organization that offers rare opportunities for international artists to research and develop new work while in London.

Gasworks Residency Programme Overview

The programme offers a Bolivian artist the opportunity to research and develop new works while in London and to take part in events and participatory workshops that engage audiences directly with the artist and their work. At the same time, the programme provides the artist with the opportunity to present their first major exhibition in the UK.

During their London residency, the artist will use their time and benefit from the available resources that the city offers; from public libraries to art institutions, as well as the Gasworks community to meet and exchange ideas with peers, other art professionals, and the general public.

Duration: 3 months

Objectives:

  • Professional development: The visiting artist will have the opportunity to experiment with their ideas and develop new works. Gasworks' extensive knowledge and international reputation provide the artist with contacts and networks to make their work visible to the professional community.

  • Public program: Visiting artists are encouraged to participate in events, talks, seminars, workshops, and presentations; aimed at further disseminating and contextualizing their portfolio and developing a dialogue with the public.

  • Open Studio Exhibition: The residency ends with an Open Studio where the artist exhibits their work produced while in residency, opening the door to further exhibit in the UK and receive feedback from professionals and curators.

Selection Process: Artists are recruited through an “Open Invitation to Apply” which is advertised in local and national newspapers in Bolivia; through Kiosko (a member of Triangle Network), as well as through curators, writers, scholars, and other contacts of the Trust.

The programme is open to artists working in all disciplines subject to some constraints dictated by Gaswork’s buildings and location (their studios are fairly small and not suited to stone carving and welding). Priority will be given to emerging and mid-career artists with high-quality work who have not as yet had the opportunity to work in London.

The “Open Invitation to Apply” for the residence year sponsored by CBAT is issued in January. Gasworks sets up a selection committee including a range of perspectives and relevant expertise. The Trust joins the selection committee but Gasworks maintains influence over the final selection. The selection process is completed by March providing enough time for Gasworks and the artist to establish connections, Visa applications, and to begin active development and promotion of the residency.

Once selected, the artist will be provided with private studio facilities and pastoral support during the residence. The accommodation is a shared residency house near Gasworks studios where the artist will have a private bedroom and share the common areas with three other visiting artists.
